Acceptable Cards and Renewal Policy

ACCEPTABLE CARDS
For BLS, the ST. DAVID’S HEALTHCARE accepts a valid, unexpired:

  • American Heart Association (AHA) "Healthcare Provider (HCP)" card
  • American Red Cross "CPR Professional Rescuer & AED for Healthcare Providers" card
  • The Military Training Network (MTN) BLS Healtcare Provider card--an AHA affiliate

All other cards are invalid and holders must complete an approved course, either within St. David’s Healthcare or with an outside trainer. For ACLS and PALS only AHA cards are accepted. Cards not accepted include American Safety and Health Institute (AHSI), CPR Resources, Texas CPR Training, American CPR Training and any other cards other than the above listed cards. The statement "Taught according to AHA guidelines." or some variation of that statement does not make the card acceptable.

CARD RENEWAL POLICY
All AHA course cards are valid for two years through the end of the month in which the card was issued. The AHA does not consider a cardholder’s Provider or Instructor status current beyond the recommended renewal date. There is no grace period for either provider or instructor cards, but attending a renewal class is generally acceptable if the person has attend a prior full provider class. Renewal instructors, however have the discretion of sending a student through a full provider class if lack of knowledge and/or skills indicate it is necessary.

Course Descriptions

AS OF JUNE 1, 2006 THE NEW 2005-6 GUIDELINES ARE IN EFFECT. Because of the extensive changes to ACLS/BLS/PALS technique and content all classes will begin at the designated time and students must attend the entire class. Students arriving late will not be permitted to attend and must register for another class.

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS)
BLS (CPR) Healthcare Provider Renewal Course CPR Renewal classes are for those individuals who need to renew their CPR certification. Renewal should be completed by the last day of the month of expiration on the individual’s CPR card. Classes are in 4½-5 hour blocks and allow participants flexibility to work at their own pace and renew. This process takes approximately 2 hours or less.Study guides are recommended and may be obtained from the Institute or on Meditech. Participants must score at least 84 on the written test. Target Audience: All employees whose job description requires current BLS certification.

BLS (CPR) Healthcare Provider Course CPR Healthcare Provider classes are for those individuals who have never taken a CPR course or have let their certification lapse. Classes are 8 hours in length (8a-5p). Purchase of a BLS handbook ($10.00 from Institute for Learning) is recommended but not required. Study guides may also be obtained from Institute or Meditech. Participants must score at least 84 on the written test. No charge for class, but $1.00 for course card. Target Audience: All employees whose job description requires current BLS certification.

BLS (CPR) Instructor Renewal Course CPR Instructor renewal classes are for those current CPR instructors wishing to renew their certification. Instructors should renew before the last day of the month of expiration on their Instructor CPR card and have met the 2 classes per year teaching requirement. Classes are scheduled from 0900-1100 and are a review of skills and a written test. Participants must score 90 or above on the written test. No charge for class, but $1.00 for course card. Prerequisite: Must be a current BLS instructor and have taught for the Partnership at least twice each year for the past 2 years. DAVID’S HEALTHCAREC instructors wishing to renew their certification and have met the 2 classes per year teaching requirement.

BLS (CPR) Instructor Course CPR Instructor Training classes are for individuals currently BLS certified, who have been identified as having instructor potential, scored a 84% or above on the written test, and wish to become a CPR instructor. The class is 1 day (0800-1600) and requires the participant to agree to teach 2 classes a year to maintain instructor certification. The course cost is $75 to ST. DAVID’S HEALTHCARE employees and $150 for Non-ST. DAVID’S HEALTHCARE individuals. The course includes instructor handbooks and requires the participant to be monitored teaching two classes prior to receiving an instructor certification card. Prerequisite: Current BLS certification with demonstrated instructor potential and/or recommendation by your supervisor and approval of BLS Coordinator. ADVANCED CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT (ACLS)
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider Course This two-day course is designed for health care providers that are new to Advanced Cardiac Life Support. A combination of techniques is used to present the essential information. Prerequisite: Proficient BLS Health Care Provider skills. Fee: ST. DAVID’S HEALTHCAREC Employees, $75. Non-employees, $160. Target Audience: Medical, nursing, paramedical, or allied health personnel whose daily occupation demands proficiency in the knowledge and skills of ACLS.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Recertification Course This one-day course provides an opportunity for practice and review of necessary skills and information needed for successful completion of the Advanced Cardiac Life Support course. The afternoon session is designed to evaluate participants’ ability to demonstrate competence in these skills/knowledge. Prerequisite: Must have current ACLS Provider skills. Fee: ST. PEDIATRIC ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT (PALS)

EMERGENCY NURSE PEDIATRIC COURSE (ENPC)
This course requires a registration form, payment of the course fee and approval before registration is complete. To obtain a registration form, click the CLASSES button above or contact the Institute for Learning at 544-0100. Course Fee: $185 for ST. DAVID’S HEALTHCAREC Employees and $225 for non-ST. DAVID’S HEALTHCAREC. Upon registration, you ill receive an acceptance letter and pre-course materials including an ENPC Study Guide.

ENPC is a 16-hour course designed to provide core-level pediatric knowledge and the psychomotor skills needed to care for pediatric patients. The course presents a systematic assessment model, integrates the associated anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, and identifies appropriate interventions. All participants (RN, LVN, EMT-P) are eligible to receive CECH's based on hours attended. Recognizing the need for a course in pediatric emergency nursing, the Emergency Nurses Association developed the Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC). Designed with the belief that knowledge and preparation are the core of any discipline, ENPC was developed to educate nurses on caring for acutely ill and injured children. The course teaches participants to recognize the ill or injured child and identify significant, yet subtle changes in the less acute child. Additionally, the course teaches all aspects of pediatric emergency nursing, including, but not limited to pediatric trauma or resuscitation. The ultimate goal of the course is to improve the care of the pediatric patient by increasing the knowledge, skill, and confidence of emergency nurses.

TRAUMA NURSE CORE COURSE (TNCC)

ENA developed and implemented the TNCC for national and international dissemination as a means of identifying a standardized body of trauma nursing knowledge. The TNCC (Provider) is a 16-hour course designed to provide the learner with cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills. The TNCC may be officially attended by registered nurses (RN's). Other health care providers may attend the course as observers. In order to maximize success in the TNCC (Provider), it is recommended that the participant have at least six months of clinical nursing experience in an emergency care setting. It is assumed that the course participant possesses generic nursing knowledge, has an understanding of emergency care terminology, and has familiarity
